Town centre

The coastal town of Wells-next-the-Sea is steeped in history with plenty of narrow lanes, various shops, cafes, pubs and interesting art galleries to discover. There are three main areas of the town which all have different interests to discover. Staithe Street is the main shopping hub leading from the harbour to the top of the old High Street. A great way to while away your time having cake & coffee or browsing the various stores which have plenty to offer including clothing, homeware, gifts & artwork as well as some delicious local produce. The Buttlands, a beautiful, leafy green square lined with lime trees and surrounded by elegant Georgian houses, hosts many of the town's events including live music concerts, a craft fair, a fete and Screen on the Green during Wells Carnival week which takes place in the summer. The harbour is a hive of activity with The Port of Wells office being located there as well as various fishing vessels & leisure boats. Crabbing or 'Gillying' is a must activity when visiting Wells harbour and is a lot of fun as well as educational. Bang in Wells is a short walk from all three of these areas as we are located at the top of Staithe Street just around the corner from The Buttlands.

Wells Beach

Nestled between beautiful pine trees and the dramatic North Sea, the award-winning beach at Wells forms part of the Holkham Estate and is unique in character; instantly recognised by over 200 beach huts of all different colours and size. Plentiful in wildlife such as nesting birds and seals the beach continues to the west towards Holkham. Wells beach is dog friendly from the far end of the car park. Please be respectful to wildlife & other beach users by picking up after your dog & keeping it under control at all times.

The location is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is the setting for some of the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets. There is a beach cafe just off the car park for snacks and takeaway drinks. The beach can be reached on foot via the mile long walk along the harbour sea defence wall with plenty of boating activity to watch and stunning views of the marshes. Those wishing for a shorter walk, The Wells Beach bus runs from the football club car park to the Beach Cafe. A pioneering electric bus, the first of its kind in the UK has a ramp to accommodate accessible needs and on busy days and holidays an open-top 1951 Leyland Tiger bus also operates making the ride even more memorable. Dogs are permitted on both buses.

Holkham Beach

Holkham National Nature Reserve, one of the largest in the country, is home to many rare species of flora and fauna. The Holkham Estate is one of a select few privately owned estates to have been awarded Approved Body Status under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act which has, since July 2017, enabled it to manage its own land whilst the beach is managed by Natural England in partnership with Holkham.

Steam Trains

From the smart Victorian seaside resort of Sheringham to the Georgian town of Holt, the North Norfolk Railway runs through the county’s most stunning coastal scenery. Operated almost entirely by Volunteers from all walks of life, the line is East Anglia’s premier heritage railway. Steam trains operate daily from April to October*.

Boat Trips

Wells Harbour Tours offer trips out from Wells harbour which go out to both the beach and the marshes.Blakeney Seals with Beans Boats offers a rare opportunity to get ‘up close and personal ’ to the resident Grey seal and Common Seal colonies without causing disturbance.

Nature Walks

Whether you're coming for a walking holiday, a day out or a weekend away, there's nowhere quite like north Norfolk for walks. The changing landscape the seasons bring, makes walking through the countryside enjoyable all year round. Spring and Summer are spectacular with wild flowers and the famous Norfolk poppies.
